God's Nature & Attributes

Biblical Definition

That which is fully real, reliable, and faithful, supremely grounded in God's own character, speech, and revelation.

Origin(s)

Hebrew: אֱמֶת; Greek: ἀλήθεια

Transliteration

ʾĕmet; alētheia

Literal meaning

firmness, faithfulness, truth; truth, reality

Key Scripture(s)

Exodus 34:6; Psalm 31:5; John 14:6; John 17:17; Romans 3:4; Titus 1:2

Theological Significance

Truth belongs to God essentially: He speaks truth, acts truthfully, and cannot lie. Therefore all saving knowledge, covenant assurance, and faithful doctrine rest on God's truthful self-disclosure.

Common Misunderstanding(s)

Truth is not a cold abstraction or merely private sincerity. In Scripture it is objective, covenantally reliable, and finally centered in Christ.

Practical Application

Believers are called to trust God's promises, submit to His revealed word, reject falsehood, and speak truth in love.
