About This Work
The content hosted here, along with the resources offered through this site, is written to direct attention toward Scripture itself and toward the God who gave it rather than toward the person preparing the work.

The purpose of this site is simple: to help readers approach the Bible with patience, careful attention, and a willingness to let Scripture interpret Scripture.

What follows is a brief account of the author’s role in that work and the commitments that shape it.
Doctrinal Commitments
The teaching on this site stands within historic Christian orthodoxy. It is grounded in the verbal inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture, which is held as the final authority for life and faith. It affirms the triune nature of God, the full deity and humanity of Jesus Christ, and salvation by grace through faith alone in His atoning work. A complete Statement of Faith is available for those who wish to examine these commitments in full.

The Approach
The studies on this site are built around inductive Bible study — a method that begins with careful observation of the text itself before moving toward interpretation and application. Rather than arriving at Scripture with conclusions already in hand, the goal is to slow down, look closely, and let the text set the terms of the discussion.

This means spending time with what the passage actually says: noticing its structure, following its logic, paying attention to repeated words and phrases, and allowing difficult verses to be held alongside the broader witness of Scripture. Where the original languages shed light on a passage's meaning, that is noted, but the studies are written to be fully accessible to readers working from an English translation.

The intended reader is an ordinary adult who takes Scripture seriously and is willing to do the work of reading carefully. No formal theological training is assumed. What is assumed is a willingness to slow down — to read a passage more than once, to sit with a question before reaching for an answer, and to trust that Scripture rewards that kind of attention.
The Author
J. Rowan Hale writes Bible studies and Christian resources shaped by long experience in the life of the local church. The work begins with a strong personal conviction — that careful, unhurried engagement with Scripture has the power to change a person — and a desire to see others experience that same transformation.

That conviction has been worked out over years spent preparing Scripture for group study, with a consistent emphasis on careful reading and deep meditation on God's Word. She has lived in close proximity to pastoral ministry for many years and has served the Church in a wide range of roles, including staff positions, children's ministry, and sustained leadership in adult Bible study. In addition to writing and leading Bible studies and Sunday School classes, she has designed and led retreats, maintained a long-running Christian blog, and pursued formal theological study.

J. Rowan Hale lives in the southeastern United States. She is the mother of grown children, shares life with several dogs, and continues to write and teach within the ordinary rhythms of church life.
A Note on What This Site Is
The resources here are offered as tools for Bible study — nothing more and nothing less. This site is not a church, and nothing here is intended as a substitute for membership in a local congregation. The studies, guides, and other materials are meant to serve readers within the context of the local church, not to replace it.

If you are not currently connected to a local church, that connection is worth pursuing. These resources may be a help to you in the meantime, but they cannot offer what a congregation of believers can.

Ransom R., Sunday school teacher
"I've gone through a lot of Bible studies over the years, and many of them tell you what the passage means before you've had a chance to see it yourself. What I appreciated about J. Rowan Hale's material is that it slows you down so that it felt less like being handed conclusions and more like learning how to read Scripture carefully."
Priya M.
"What stood out to me is how thoughtful the material is. Nothing feels rushed or surface level. The lessons guide you step by step through a passage so that by the end you understand how you arrived there."
Daniel, Bible study Leader
"I appreciate that the teaching assumes readers are capable of serious study. It doesn't talk down to you, but it also doesn't overwhelm you. It just shows you how to pay attention to the Bible."
Aisha C., Bible study participant
"I found your site while looking for help understanding a hard passage. The study method didn't just explain the passage; it showed me how to work through it myself. That gave me confidence to keep studying."
