Law
Category
Salvation & Redemption
Biblical Definition
God's revealed instruction and command, especially as given through Moses, expressing His holy will and exposing human sinfulness.
Origin(s)
Hebrew: תּוֹרָה; Greek: νόμος
Transliteration
tôrâ; nomos
Literal meaning
instruction, law; law, custom, principle
Key Scripture(s)
Exodus 20:1-17; Deuteronomy 6:1-9; Psalm 19:7-11; Romans 3:19-20; Romans 7:7-12; Galatians 3:21-24
Theological Significance
The law is holy, righteous, and good because it reflects God's character and will. Romans shows, however, that the law cannot justify sinners; instead it reveals transgression and drives the need for the righteousness God provides in Christ.
Common Misunderstanding(s)
The law is not sinful, unnecessary, or a means by which fallen people can earn salvation. Scripture presents it as good instruction that also exposes our inability apart from grace.
Practical Application
This word teaches believers to honor God's commands, confess their need for mercy, and rejoice that Christ fulfills what the law could not accomplish in us.
