Melchizedek appears briefly in Genesis 14 as the king of Salem and a priest of “God Most High.” After Abraham’s victory in battle, Melchizedek blesses him and receives a tenth of the spoils.
Though his appearance is short, later Scripture gives his role deeper meaning. Psalm 110 and Hebrews 5–7 describe him as a pattern for a different kind of priesthood, one that points beyond the Levitical system.
