Zephaniah prophesied during the early reign of King Josiah in Judah, a period when idolatry and spiritual compromise had spread widely throughout the nation. The prophet announces the approaching “day of the Lord,” a time when God will confront sin and bring judgment not only upon Judah but upon surrounding nations as well. The warnings are direct and urgent, calling the people to humility and repentance before judgment arrives. Yet the book does not end with destruction. Zephaniah also promises that God will purify a faithful remnant and restore His people. The closing verses portray a future in which God rejoices over His people and renews them.
