Leviticus follows directly after the construction of the tabernacle in Exodus. With God now dwelling among His people, Israel must learn how to approach Him rightly. The book addresses the generation that had been delivered from Egypt and gathered at Mount Sinai. Rather than narrating historical events, Leviticus records laws and instructions given through Moses for priests and the people. These include sacrificial offerings, purity laws, priestly responsibilities, and guidelines for festivals and community life. In the biblical timeline, Leviticus takes place during Israel’s encampment at Sinai, shortly after the covenant was established. Its emphasis is theological: God is holy, and His people must reflect that holiness. The sacrificial system teaches that sin requires atonement, while the priesthood mediates between God and the nation. Many of these practices anticipate later biblical themes, especially the ultimate sacrifice and priesthood fulfilled in Christ.
