Historical & Biblical Context
Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to the church in Corinth, a large and culturally diverse city known for commerce and social influence. The Christian community there faced numerous internal problems, including divisions between groups of believers, ethical compromises, and misunderstandings about spiritual gifts and Christian freedom. Paul responds by addressing reports he had received and questions the church had written to him about. Throughout the letter he repeatedly points believers back to the central message of the gospel and the transforming power of Christ’s death and resurrection. The letter includes detailed teaching on unity in the church, the meaning of the Lord’s Supper, spiritual gifts, and the hope of resurrection. Within the New Testament narrative, 1 Corinthians provides an extended example of how apostolic teaching guided early churches through complex moral and theological challenges.
